“Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”
-Maya Angelou
There are periods in our lives where nothing seems to be going right. The car won’t start which causes you to be late for work. You spill coffee on your brand new shirt. The market has dried up and you must sell your business. You lose the love of your life. When these days happen it just feels like a there is just a dark cloud hovering over you. But one must remember the old adage: when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. This doesn’t mean you will overcome dark times that happen in your life through your own sheer will power each and every time. And if you think it will, it won’t. Often times it is because of the support and guidance from someone in your life that serves as the rainbow within your cloud that ultimately shines through.
Maya Angelou’s quote today reminds us that we all should try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud. Unexpected struggles happen. Life is going to have it’s ups and downs. But just as a rainbow reveals itself after a terrible storm, there will be that light at of that tunnel. To me, when I see a rainbow, I see hope. I see promise for a better tomorrow. Not for me or you but for the world; for our children. We need one another to be each other’s rainbow; to be that hope and inspiration when times are tough. It’s in our nature to do so.
The next time you see someone you love struggling, family or not, be that rainbow for them. Be that sunshine on their cloudy day. In doing so, they will pay it forward to someone else in need of that pick me up. Who knows? That someone could be you.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
