“If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”
-Dolly Parton
I’m sure you have heard the phrase “the road less traveled.” This is when we are faced with one of many crossroads we come across in our lives. We choose the path we have yet to be on. If you haven’t come to a crossroads yet, just wait; it happens when we least expect it. In today’s quote by the musical artist and actress Dolly Parton she reminds us that just because we are heading in a certain direction by the choices we have made, we have the power within us to change course if we decide to do so. This does not mean there is always an already clearly defined route or path to take. She encourages us to start paving a new one ourselves; to be our own trendsetter so to speak.
The only thing that keeps us from creating a new path is ultimately us. We decide to continue to go down that same road that is familiar to us, feels safe and makes us feel rather comfortable. This is ok as long as you know you are still headed in what you think is the right direction based on where you started. More often than not this isn’t the case. In the words of Ross from the TV show Friends, this is when we must “PIVOT!” And believe, me choosing to go a new course or path is scary especially if there has not been anyone before you to do it. However, this all comes down to your perspective on it and whether or not you can handle the unknown path that lies before you. You can either allow the various negative emotions take over (fear, sadness or anger) or you can choose to control them by thinking positive and instead, you control your own narrative. All it takes is a belief in yourself and your abilities, and knowing that you can always change course again if need be.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
