Becoming The Change: The Key To Finding Yourself

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

-Mahatma Gandhi

Today’s quote by Gandhi reminds me of how my own personal journey has brought me to this point and time in my life. I never knew who I was or what I wanted to do career wise until I took a class in high school that changed everything. My senior year I took a class called Child Development with two of the best teachers I ever had: Mrs. Sengbusch and Mrs. Vance. They opened the doorway to me becoming an educator and for that I will forever be grateful to them both. They taught me the beauty within this profession: not being a sage on a stage but rather that guide on the side for our children, our future.

This class helped me to find myself and what I wanted to do with my life. We would have days of study around among obvious things like how a child develops intellectually as well as socially and emotionally. But it was the days the preschoolers would come in that would just brighten each and every day. For me it allowed me to lose myself as Gandhi had put it, in the service of others; in this case these tiny humans who had such untapped and unlimited potential with the world as their oyster. This opportunity, to positively impact children each day is something that to me never gets old.

This calling is not an easy one, and there are days that are rougher than others. However, it is all worth it in the end. I believe they need us as much as we need them. We just need to remember to always look at the world that they see, that they are experiencing, through their eyes because when we do that, it will create a greater bond with them that can last a lifetime. Educators are the game changers society needs, and no one can convince me otherwise. Children are our legacy and to have the chance to contribute in any way towards helping them become the change we hope to see in the world. To me that is a daily challenge I am willing to accept and take on.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
