Becoming The Change: Pushing Forward When Faced With Adversity

“You just gotta keep going and fighting for everything, and one day you’ll get to where you want.”

-Naomi Osaka

Let’s face it. Life is hard. Things are not as easy to achieve as we may have once thought. We come face to face with unexpected challenges which can leave us frustrated, dejected and defeated. Several overarching questions remain: Is it worth it to keep pushing forward? Is it worth fighting the good fight? Is it better to just throw in towel and change course?

Deep questions that require deep reflection. Much like a game of chess in determining your next move, your aren’t making a move to win a simple board game, you are making a move that could alter the trajectory of your current path and quite possibly affect your desired destination. Overcoming adversity is the name of the game.

A person who knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity is Tennis player Naomi Osaka. In today’s quote she inspires us to keep moving forward and fight for what it is we are seeking to accomplish. If we stay the course, we will reach the destination we desire.

I recently listened to a podcast where they encouraged us not to pay attention to the numbers: the number of cold emails we may have sent to see if someone would bite on a certain pitch idea we had, whether it be a book or writing on a subject for a popular magazine for example. Why? Because does it really matter in the long run whether someone takes that chance on you after the first email or the 50th email you sent? It actually doesn’t, because you achieved the same goal despite the number of attempts. It shouldn’t matter. All it proves is that you just persevered much longer in order to reach your desired goal. I know about this firsthand as it took me over 50 emails for pitching my book idea to have someone take a chance on me.

We need to remember that adversity is around every corner and in our pathway blocking us and challenging us. So the questions are really these: How bad do you really want this? Have you exhausted all options? How much regret will you have if you just give up?

There is a saying I have heard before that goes something like this, “Is the juice worth the squeeze?” Only you can determine if it is. Remember this is a decision that should not be taken lightly. We go through this life once and we need to make moments like these count if they mean that much to us in reaching the pinnacle of our lives at that point in time. So does it?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
