Becoming The Change: Having This One Thing Will In Turn Have Others Gravitate Towards You

“If you have a moral compass, and you stay with it, people will always gravitate towards you.”

-Carol Alt

Each of us have things that we deeply believe in. I’m not necessarily talking specifically about religion although that is something. For the purpose of today’s message I am referring to the belief that each of us have a moral compass that helps guide us through life.

If you have been a long time reader of this blog, to me, the essence of our moral compass is comprised of five elements that all connect to each other. At its center is self-awareness and each of the cardinal directions are self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. This is known on a bigger scale as social Emotional Learning (SEL).:Below is a visual image of it and is also seen in my first book Becoming The Change: Five Essential Elements To Being Your Best Self:

Much like we use an actual compass to give us directions and guide us when we are lost in the woods, I believe our moral compass is what gives us the direction and guidance we need as we experience life socially and emotionally. We lean on certain elements depending on the situation we are faced with and it always comes back to self awareness as that area is at its epicenter and continues to grow with the development of the other four elements.

When we relate our own moral compass to today’s quote by Carol Alt, she reminds us that if we stay true to our moral compass and essentially what we believe in, then other people will gravitate to you. To me, people are attracted to those that stand firm with their morals and values in what they believe in. This means that no matter what life throws at them, they are in it to win it; to stay the course. They will not compromise for anything: not a chance to get ahead or step on/over others to reach the pinnacle of whatever their hopes and dreams may be. They in essence refuse to lose themselves because if they do, I can guarantee you they will have lost the others that were following them along the way. The central message is: Stay true to who you are no matter what.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
