“Late into my life, I learned to be far less judgmental of others.”

One of my favorite shows probably of all time has to be Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis. It was not only a very funny show but the lessons in life it taught, were things I would never forget and apply many to my life every day. There is a scene when Ted is playing a game of darts against a rather arrogant person named Rupert. The wagers were quite high and Rupert was quite over confident as it seemed that Ted had never played darts before.
However, all this was a ruse. It turns out that Ted did know how to play and in fact was better than he led on. Even though he started to play right handed he made the statement he was not right, but rather left. He then went on to say that people have doubted him his whole life. He told the story of him driving his son somewhere and seeing the quote “Be curious, not judgmental” which he immediately loved the saying. No one, not even Rupert cared to ask if he’d ever played darts which in fact he did up until his father’s passing when Ted was 16. The end result? Ted beat Rupert straight up.
Today’s quote is much like the Ted Lasso example. We live in a society where everyone is so quick to judge someone: by the way they look or talk or even the size of their bank account. And what is often said online about one another is even worse! It is like you can’t even voice your opinion on something without getting chastised for it. We should see to understand first, and not seek to judge. This should be the way in which the world works. We are all different and until we realize this about ourselves, that element of self awareness will be almost be non existent as a part of our own moral compass.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
