Becoming The Change: The Hardest Skill To Master

“The hardest human skill to master is the ability to actively listen.”

-Anonymous

Let’s face it. The world around us is a busy place. This does not make it easy to keep us from being distracted. You know what is even worse? The fact that what is going on in between our ears is just as , if not, more busy. I don’t know about you but my mind doesn’t seem to have an off switch. I am constantly keeping one eye on what the current task is at hand and the other on the next project. I’m learning this is not the best way of work not is it productive. The main problem is I am struggling with consistently being “in the moment.” I am not as present as I should be.

These distractions inadvertently continue to affect me mastering the hardest skill as mentioned in today’s quote: the ability to be an active listener. If you are an active listener then please let me know who you are because I am in need of some lessons to stay focused on this important skillset. This does not mean I never have it. When I think about it, I can turn it on at work but when I transition home, I know I am not as sharp and I my thoughts seem to go adrift. Not a good thing mind you and something I continue to work on. The struggle is real though.

What seems to help is practicing mindfulness as I meditate each and every morning. It serves as a good way for me to set me up for a productive day. day. I think I may have to add in a second session on my way home from work (with my eyes open of course) as I think this will allow me to reset for home which my family deserves all of me being present and actively listening just as the expectation is for my career.

We are all a work in progress. If we truly want to connect with others on a deeper level then we must master the skill of active listening. It is the only way to truly let others know we care about them and what it is they are trying to say.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self management?
