What Life Is Made Of

“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what is made by the friends we choose.”

-Tennessee Williams

We all possess the power to make our lives become whatever it is we desire them to be. As the famous American playright, Tennessee Williams, who penned such famous Broadway plays as A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, reminds us that life is what we make of it. The second part of his quote is what is most interesting. He goes onto to say life is also partly made by the friends we choose.

Choosing the right friends or better yet the right relationships is one of the most important decisions to make in order to get the life you desire. Think back to all the relationships you have ever had. Have all of them withstood the of time? Probably not all of them, but I’m sure you always thought they would last. I know I did. As we mentally grow and develop, each of the areas of Social Emotional Learning evolve too. The way you are now is not what you were at the age of five in those areas. This is no different in your relationship skills.

Our interests change in what we want to pursue in life changes and this affects our taste in the type of individuals we want to involved in. This can have positive or negative connotations based on the friend we choose. I was lucky. The people I hung out with in high school and college were ones for the most part that had the same hopes and dream that I did like going to college, getting a job and starting a family. They were not concerned with being in the “in crowd” and resisted inappropriate social pressures to conform in order to fit into some kind of click. Those that were unable to lost themselves and were knocked off their path towards the life they originally set out to live.  Some were able to recover and get back on that path but unfortunately not all.

It is so important that we are mindful of the right friends and relationships we choose as this helps us to make a life. We want them there for us when times are tough and be our sounding board when we come across bumps in our journey to living the life we desire. In other words we’d like them to be like Pinocchio’s Jiminy Cricket, having them be our conscious and help guide us through life. We do not want them to be “yes” friends either that agree with everything we say but rather challenge us and our thinking in order for us to continue to learn and grow.  Relationships are crucial to our success on this one way ticket to living up to our full potential. Make sure you choose wisely as to who specifically you want to be a part of this journey. It makes all the difference.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
