American Labor leader and Civil Rights activist Dolores Huerta’s quote is a statement that contains three important decisions to make in order to be the best person we can be. She is co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association and has been a great influential leader. Let’s take a closer look at these three important decisions that Dolores Huerta was referring to.
Every moment is an organizing opportunity. This particular portion of the statement reminds us that every moment, no matter whether it is good or bad, must be looked upon as a way of affording us the chance to make things right if need be or continue on the path we are currently on. It makes reference to organizing that opportunity. I think the organizing piece helps you once you made the decision to jump at that opportunity, set forth certain criteria or benchmarks along the way to better monitor your progress in making the most out of things. Remember…an opportunity is makes something possible to do something. If you don’t even attempt to explore that opportunity, you will never know what might have been. In doing so, you rob yourself and quite possibly those closest to you of benefiting from that opportunity that you passed up.
Every person is a potential activist. This part of the quote presents itself with another decision for each person to make. We can either decide to help bring forth political/social change or make the decision to just sit “on the sidelines” and complain about nothing ever changing which to be honest serves no purpose whatsoever. If we make the conscious decision to help to make this world a better place, we then need to decide to actually do something about it and take the necessary steps to make that difference for those that in the present as well as for the people of tomorrow. Be the change.
Every minute is a chance to change the world. Just this statement alone should leave you feeling that time, when handled intentionally with the end of mind, can become a powerful tool and realize that time is actually on your side. There are 1,140 minutes in a day, 10,080 minutes in a week and 525,600 minutes in a year. No matter how you look at it, each minute represents its own opportunity to make a difference. It takes less than a minute to make a decision but only if we decide to create that internal drive. A drive to get what we want out of this life with the goal of making this world a better place.
So. Three choices. Three opportunities. Three decisions to make. Each is its own stand alone focus. However when the decisions are made in succession and the connections between them are explicitly made the limitless potential of what you can become is unstoppable. Make every moment count. And do this for yourself first and foremost because it’s your life and it’s your future.
