“Being right half the time beats being half-right all the time.”
-Malcolm Forbes
Let’s face it: as much as we’d like to be right about things all the time we know the chances of that actually happening is as the saying goes slim to none and slim left town. But when it all comes down to it, is it important to be right all of the time? It isn’t. Being wrong in my opinion helps build character. What I find interesting is American entrepreneur and publisher of Forbes magazine Malcom Forbes’ quote where he says “being right half of the time beats being half-right all of the time.”
When we really take a closer look at recognizing that our own thoughts influence our behavior, we begin to develop a well established sense of confidence in our own innate abilities that although there will be times that we may not be right in our thinking we have the tools necessary to adjust and change course if need be. Malcolm Forbes was the type of businessman that exemplified this and what I like about his message is that when we are right half of the time, half of the decisions or choices we made produced positive results. In other words we are continuously moving forward, either with our business, family or ourselves.
On the other hand if we are only half right all of the time progress will be very limited and lacks consistency. It presents a challenge as it will make it harder for us to accurately develop a solid perception of ourselves which is where our self awareness develops and grows based on our experiences. If we are day in and day out just so-so in our thought process as well as our decision making capabilities how will be ever have anyone want to follow us? People long for consistency and being half right all of the time will not be the consistency they would be looking for.
When we are methodical in our thought process and are able to anticipate our reaction to when go right or when they do not, we are able to adjust our sails to these winds of change and keep moving in the right direction towards reaching our full potential.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
