Our Moral Compass: A Surplus of Effort Overcomes A Deficit Of Confidence

“A surplus of effort could overcome a deficit of confidence.”

-Sonia Sotomayor

Our thoughts can sometimes be our best friend or our worst enemy. We provide ourselves with positive or negative self talk. If we aren’t careful a heavy dose of negative self talk can lead us towards a insurmountable deficit of confidence. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomoyer suggests that in order to overcome this deficit of confidence we must give a surplus of effort.

When we go above and beyond in trying to better ourselves in anything we do it not only increases our self confidence but also allows for optimism and our growth mindset to continue to strengthen. Giving a surplus of effort has never been for nought and serves a purpose even if at first you are unsure that it does. This is where perseverance comes into play and not giving up. Above all else we owe it to ourselves to not give up because we need to realize that we have too much to offer this life and to the lives of others. I am convinced that if we do this, then our hard fought efforts to be our best selves will never be done in vain.
