Our Moral Compass: Growth and Comfort

“I learned to always take on things I’d never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist.

Ginni Rometty

When I think of taking on things I have never done before there are times that I am hesitant and there other times I jump right in. To those times I am all in, I chalk that up and my decision to give something that I have never done before a try towards having the self-confidence in myself and my abilities to do it. I may not know everything about what I am going to be jumping feet first into but sometimes it is the thrill of it, excitement, the fear of the unknown and even my own curiosity is what typically prompts me to make that attempt. To take that risk. And the way I look at it, if I rely and trust myself in my own abilities, the qualities I possess and the open mindedness I try to uphold when facing new experiences, I believe everything will turn out alright. Based on today’s quote I believe American businesswoman Ginni Rometty believes in this too and what I like the most about what she has to say is that growth and comfort do not coexist.

Essentially we cannot grow as individuals if we are not willing to think outside of the box and challenge ourselves or stretch our thinking. As the saying goes, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You only get out what you put in. Don’t expect more until you do more. If we get too comfortable we become lazy, which turns into carelessness. We wind up regressing instead of progressing. So don’t fall into the trap of complacency. Seek continual growth over comfort.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
