Where Happiness Comes From

“Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within.”

-Helen Keller

As we all know happiness is something that can never truly be bought because it isn’t a thing, it’s feeling, an emotion. American author, political activist and lecturer Helen Keller’s quote reminds us of this and she embodied this same philosophy throughout her life.

Helen Keller was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She would give lectures and through these provide inspirational messages of optimism, hope and good cheer. Helen Keller became an advocate for others with disabilities and widely impacted the deaf community. She even spoke on Happiness and reiterated how blessed she was and what life had given her despite not being able to see or hear. Helen Keller even inspired others through the 12 books she published and the articles she wrote. She was a very accomplished and inspirational woman.

What stood out to me was despite her challenges, she chose to be happy no matter what. She could have easily waited for outside factors to make her happy that most likely never would have come. Instead Helen Keller made her own happiness happen. She was determined not to have life dictate to her what was going to happen and decided to as they say “grab the bull by the horns” and be in control of her life. Happiness started and ended with her.

We have that same opportunity that Helen Keller did. We need to realize how much we have going for us. Stop for a moment and think about it. You and only you can determine your own happiness. No one else can. Once you recognize this, nothing can truly stand in your way. Remember happiness is in the eye of the beholder and it is up to you to make it happen. So what do you have to lose?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
