Recognizing the Humanity In One Another

“In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”

-Thurgood Marshall

Treat others as you would want to be treated. How many of us had our parents use this line with us? How often have you, if you have kids or are a teacher said the same thing to them? If you are like me then the answer to both questions is a resounding yes! In today’s quote Thurgood Marshall reminds us of the importance of humanity: when we acknowledge it in others we are, in return, paying that same tribute to ourselves. Thurgood Marshall should know as he was the first African American Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in the United States. Throughout all of the cases he must have presided over I’m confident he was able to witness this selfless act every once in a while.

Humanity focuses on caring for and helping others whenever and wherever possible. We recognize in the grand scheme of things that it is not just about us and this allows us to exhibit the love we truly have for one another. Humanity affords each of us to display acts of kindness, mercy and sympathy too. When we embody each of these and make the effort to utilize these characteristics within ourselves to enhance our relationships with others we also enhance the relationship within ourselves.

It is often said in order to love others we must first love ourselves. Exhibiting humanity is the gateway to that love. We as a society are in desperate need to have a heavy dose of it. Let’s make a conscious effort to recognize the good that is within others, that humanity because it is already inside all of us. There is no time like the present.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
