“Self-knowledge is no guarantee of happiness, but it is on the side of happiness and can supply the courage to fight for it.”
-Simone De Beauvoir
One of our greatest challenges in our lives is really knowing who we are because if we don’t truly know ourselves or understand ourselves for that matter, then how can we understand others? Now knowing ourselves is only one side of that social awareness coin. It’s loving ourselves for who we are and being happy in our own skin is the other. In today’s quote French writer, political activist and feminist Simone de Beauvoir essentially said that self knowledge is no guarantee to us achieving happiness but rather it is something that is in happinesses’ corner which can give us the courage we need to fight for it.
When we dig deep and really self reflect we are able assess our own strengths and limitations. In a way we know where we stand as far as our place in this world. We know what brings us happiness and what does not. We learn to utilize the tools of self awareness in helping us recognize our own emotions, thoughts and values and how they influence our behavior. Knowing all of this about ourselves we can act more accordingly and plan for using the courage within all of us to fight for that happiness that we all righteously deserve. We cannot make others happy if we cannot do the same for ourselves.
