“Get busy livin’, or get busy dyin.’ ”
-The Shawshank Redemption
One of the mot popular movies of the 1990’s was the movie called The Shawshank Redemption which was about a man accused of a crime he didn’t commit and spent almost 20 years in prison for it. During his time there and when he finally reached his breaking point he said probably one of the most memorable lines in the film: “Get busy livin’, or get busy dyin.'” A short but very powerful quote and one I believe should resonate with us all.
We only live and go through this life once. From the moment we are born we are all already dying. By no means am I trying to make today’s message depressing but rather just stating the facts. Each day, each passing moment goes by all too fast. I look back and one moment I was an elementary school and now I’m more than halfway through the first phase of my career in education. It seems like yesterday that my daughter was born and now she is a Freshman in college in a blink of the eye. We need to hit the pause button for a moment and truly think about today’s quote. Are we busy living our life and the way we want it to be? Or is life itself dictating things?
It is time for us realign ourselves with what we truly want; what truly matters and answer these questions. We must grab the reigns and live the life we were meant to live with no regrets. The dying part is going to happen naturally and there is nothing we can really do about it. What we can do is decide to get busy living because that is a decision we have complete control over.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
