Our Moral Compass: Listen To Your Heart

“Listen with the ear of your heart.”

-Prologue to Rule of Saint Benedict

Listen to your heart. Not only is this phrase the name of a song by the band Roxette it is something that we constantly hear. The Prologue to Rule of Saint Benedict’s quote is one of utmost importance encouraging us to listen with the ear of our heart. We have the tendency to use the ears on the sides of our head which incorporates the mind to critically assess or judge situations and for that matter people. This can lead to developing unnecessary biases because we neglect to take on the perspective and emphasize with others, especially those from diverse backgrounds or cultures.

Today’s quote reminds us not to forget the third ear which is our heart. Our heart is the gateway towards becoming more socially aware. When we take the time to really look at things through another person’s lens (aka their perspective), the foundation is laid down for a pathway towards empathy and the appreciation for diversity and developing a deep respect for one another to be possible. Let’s ensure we take the time to listen with the ear of our hearts today and always.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
