Welcome to the Our Moral Compass Podcast. Peace And Freedom Are Inseparable
“You can’t separate peace from freedom, because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.”
-Malcolm X
There are many things that we look at as being are interconnected. Peanut Butter and Jelly. Yin and Yang. Peace and Freedom. It is the latter that African American Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X spoke about as he said that the two cannot be separated and that no can be at peace unless they have their freedom. There has never been a truer statement. This referred to racial equality but is applicable to so many things that are equity related today from race to gender.
The official definition of peace is a concept of societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence while freedom is having the ability to act, speak or think without hinderance or constraint. You can’t have true friendships within society or harmony for that matter if you are not able to or prevented from acting, speaking or thinking without being penalized in some sort of fashion for just being you. Further more can we honestly say that there is no hostility and violence currently as a society? No we can’t, as it is still happening politically and socially. It is unsettling and down right worrisome.
I have a hard time understanding why it seems so difficult for some of us to remove the labels of hate and replace them with love. We should be able to appreciate our differences while respecting one another for those same differences. So what if someone else’s opinion differs from your own? Why does it always have to be someone being right and proving someone else they are wrong? Can’t they both be right? And at the end of the day who cares? What matters is celebrating those differences and realizing that because of those differences it is what makes us who we are. Besides you may learn something about someone else or even learn something about yourself that you never knew existed. Being different makes us unique. It makes us special. I don’t want everyone to always agree with me or believe in what I believe in because I don’t want to live with blinders on. I want someone to challenge my ideas and get me to see things from their point of view. This will make me a better human being in a long run and become a more well rounded person.
When we allow freedom to ring in all facets of our lives and everyone else’s for that matter, we can truly live a peaceful existence. And that sounds pretty good to me.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
