The Art Of Leadership

For any leader, whether they are a veteran or just beginning their leadership journey one of the greatest challenges they face is learning to say no and hitting the pause button on something when everyone else is telling them to say yes. In doing so this shows others either within or outside your organization that you have a great amount of patience or better yet some deep insight into why it was better to wait. and say no. This is the art of leadership former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair speaks of in today’s quote.
Leadership has many sides to it and the qualities that make it into one that we all aspire to attain. Some of these are, but not limited to ones like possessing integrity, empathy, positivity and influence. But to me the one that stands out the most is having the type of leader who is a responsible decision maker. They do what’s right based on their values and what is best for others. They do not give in to outside pressure and base their decisions not only on facts but also what is in their heart. Tony Blair also mentions how it is much easier to say yes. I think this is because the path of least resistance is sometimes easier and for some it is easier to keep with the Joneses so to speak than go against the grain. It also avoids potential conflict. But I believe a leader stands up for what they believe in. They go against the grain even if it means doing what is right and just.
The art of leadership is learning to say no even when it is unpopular amongst the people they lead. However, ideas are shared with leaders constantly. Leaders must determine which ideas to proceed with, and which ideas need to be discounted. Its because of their decision making capabilities that makes them the leaders that they are and ones that are respected by all who cross their path.
