Live Together As Brothers and Sisters Or Perish Together Like Fools

“We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

One of the crucial areas that influences our moral compass is that of social awareness. Despite whatever differences may exist between one another, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. encouraged us in today’s quote for all of us to learn to live together as brothers. And I am sure he also meant for us to learn to live together live like sisters too. The point is if we are to truly grow as individuals then we need to live our lives with an open mind and heart. The key word in Dr. King’s quote is learn. Learning is not a one and done type of process but rather a process that occurs over time. It comes about through our experiences too. I’d like to think it also comes with age too because I continually learn things about myself and those around me as I’m getting older.

When we are socially aware we have the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. We understand them more through looking at things through their lens and when we do that we learn to appreciate diversity. This appreciation leads to respect. That is all Dr. King would have wanted us to all be able to do. The one thing he did caution us with though is that if we were unable to live together we’d perish like fools and that would be without a doubt lead to a series of unfortunate events that could have devastating consequences as it pertains to maintaining or having certain relationships with others. So let’s try to accept one another for who we are and celebrate our differences. Dr. King would have wanted this way.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
