What To Do When You’re Feeling Helpless?

Traditionally the holidays bring forth a lot of happiness for many people because it is where you partake in family traditions and travel to spend time with your loved ones that you may not get to see very often. However for some, this can be a very sad and depressing time of year either because of missing a loved one they may have lost or other factors like being out of a job. This year it most likely will be one of the most difficult holiday seasons in recent memory due to COVID 19 numbers on the rise again which is preventing many families from coming together, even if they all live locally, for the fear of getting one another sick. This most definitely will leave some feeling helpless. So today’s quote by Politician, diplomat and author Aung San Suu Kyi comes at a perfect time when we need to all hear it most, “If you’re feeling helpless, help someone.”

Often times when we feel helpless all we want is to be the host of our own pity party. The only problem is we will be the only ones at that party which is not doing us or anyone else any good at all. Why not take Kyi’s advice and help someone. This will make those that you are helping feel better but also you as well. And the other benefit will be that in doing this selfless act the bond between you and that certain someone will further deepen your relationship along the way. London’s Global University in April 2020 made a list of 10 benefits that can occur by helping others:

  1. Helping others feels good.
  2. It creates a sense of belonging.
  3.  It gives you a sense of purpose.
  4. Giving helps keep things in perspective.
  5. It’s contagious.
  6. Helping others can help you live longer.
  7. It will give you a sense of renewal.
  8. You’ll boost your self-esteem.
  9. You’ll create stronger friendships.
  10. You become a glass half-full type person.

Any of these 10 will make you feel great about helping others and will allow your own feelings of helplessness disappear.. So let’s be there for those who need us during this holiday season and always.
