More Connects Us Than Separates Us

As we all well know, often times movies and the storylines mirror real life events even if the movie is more of a fantasy. For this particular reference for today’s message I am referring to the highly acclaimed Marvel movie The Black Panther. This 2018 movie was a blockbuster of a movie and not solely for the money it made but for it’s social message for its appreciation of the richness and depth of both black culture in the United States and African culture. The late Chadwick Boseman who played the lead role as the Black Panther was the perfect person to play this hero because he was a hero in real life as well. There are many quotable scenes from this movie and things that were said by The Black Panther but I think the one for today is one we need to hear and apply towards everything we do in order to heal a very culturally damaged nation as we head into 2021 and beyond.
The Black Panther’s plea to ignore the illusions that are dividing us otherwise it poses a threat to continual survival. We listen too often to others’ opinions and what the facts that they choose to share are without us doing our own due diligence in finding out all of the facts on something on our own. We need to be critical consumers and not always except everything at face value. For whatever reason many of us look for what divides us instead of what unites us. We look for the negative instead of the positive. When has this ever benefited our own well being or the well being of others? It really hasn’t. Why does it have to be agreeing with one side or the other based on a party affiliation? Why can it not be based on what is best for all and it doesn’t matter who came up with the idea first? Besides the idea should be a benefit to all, not a certain class or race.
The Black Panther further goes on to say the truth is that more connects us than divides us and again he is right whether we want to believe it or not. Why do we get so caught up in things that only prevent us for making progress as a nation, as a culture? I don’t know about you but I am tired of being stuck in the same pattern in not taking to time to really listen to what each side is saying to the other and being the referee all the time and forced to pick a side. I pick the side of fighting for all humanity and for equity. So there. And here are some other facts I’d like to share. We are all different. We have diverse backgrounds and cultures. No law or acts of violence will change this so we need to get over it and take the time to better understand one another and like T’Chilla says in the movie, let’s build bridges instead of barriers because we are really in fact one tribe. So I believe it is time for us to act like one tribe for the sake and future of all humanity.
