Would You Rather Be A Prisoner Of The Past Or A Pioneer Of The Future?
“Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.”
-Deepak Chopra
I like to think of us all as a work of art. Art that is never ever truly finished as we continuously strive to perfect ourselves in all that we do. There is a saying that old habits die hard. These old habits are like our default mechanism that we have the tendency to fall back to when faced with certain challenges. More often than not these old habits are a detriment to our well being rather than an advocate. In today’s quote American-Indian author and meditator Deepak Chopra asks us a question that we need to answer when we face certain challenges in life and are tempted to react in the same old way: do we want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future?
The official definition of a prisoner is a person who is deprived of liberty against their will through confinement, captivity, or forcible restraint. In essence we are stuck in a negative pattern with the thoughts that are in our minds as well as our negative reactions to situations that were more than likely out of our control. We may have even said things we later regretted. Doesn’t sound like a great track record does it? So why go back down a path that you know only brings you pain and bad memories. Don’t pigeon hole yourself. It is time to break free and be that pioneer of the future.
A pioneer is a person who is among the first to explore or settle a new country or area. So in Deepak Chopra’s example he is wanting us to explore our emotions and channel a new way in reacting to certain situations. We have a whole lifetime ahead of us and this should be the time for us to be bold, daring and vulnerable with how we react. We have that power and control to choose this. So why not go for it? Choose to be the first to explore your emotions like you never have before. Like author Marc Brackett says give yourself that permission to feel.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
