Be Kind Always
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.”
Have you ever experienced someone being short with you or even blatantly ignoring you when said hello or even asked them how their day was? Was it someone you knew well or just a person in passing? When they gave you that reaction or lack of one how did you take it? Did you ask yourself what’s their problem, comment how rude they were or in turn get angry yourself? One of our greatest faults as human beings is we are so quick to judge others as to who they are personality wise based on how someone treats or reacts to us and we really don’t take the time to know their story and what they may be going through that may have caused the negative encounter.
Today’s anonymous quote serves as a reminder for us to realize that each of us have our own personal battles that we are fighting each and every day and to remember to always be kind to one another. This is where empathy comes into play and we really need to look at things through their lens and try to understand what they may be going through. What we usually see when we see others is what they probably see when they look at us: everything that is just surface level and is at face value. There are so many layers beneath what we project out to others and are things that never are seen by the outside world. They can be memories that bring us pain and despite our best efforts to suppress them, can overtake our usually happy demeanor that causes those negative interactions. They are never meant to be intentional and we’ve all had this happen at one time or another. The challenge is for us to realize this and instead of reacting in a negative way remember to be kind. We have no idea what type of day they may have had or what they may currently be struggling with. Show some grace and compassion. Be there for them in their time of need if they will let you. If they decline then just continue to be kind and let them know you are there for them whenever they need you.
Every November 13th is Kindness Day but we should not limit this to a single day. We need to be kind to one another each and everyday. So next time, don’t be so quick to judge. Instead of reacting, take a step back and realize they must be dealing with something that is really challenging them right now. Empathize with them in what they may be going through and just be kind always. It’s a simple formula but an important one.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
