We Should Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

-Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was known as one of the most influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution. His quote today is powerful and deep one in my opinion. It is also one that is something that we all need to play close attention to in order to truly reach our full potential in this life. I believe his central message is on the importance that it is through our relationships and those that we admire and look up to, that helps us to see beyond our current reality and towards our deeper and just cause.

I believe this type of the relationship is seen in those who are paired together as a mentor and mentee. And their benefits are two fold (courtesy of and Ashton University post):

Benefits of a Mentee:

  • Gain practical advice, encouragement and support
  • Learn from the experiences of others
  • Increase your social and academic confidence
  • Become more empowered to make decisions
  • Develop your communication, study and personal skills
  • Develop strategies for dealing with both personal and academic issues
  • Identify goals and establish a sense of direction

Benefits of a Mentor:

  • Improve communication and personal skills
  • Develop leadership and management qualities
  • Increase your confidence and motivation
  • Gain recognition for your skills and experience
  • Benefit from a sense of fulfillment and personal growth

As you can see both sides benefit from their interactions with one another and there are a lot of things that they have in common. If mentees look at things with an open mind they are able to see that in order to get where they want to be in their life they will need to lean on those that will guide them to that so called promise land: their mentor. By “standing on their shoulders” the mentors are, in my mind represent that foundation that all mentees need until they are able gain that solid footing on their own. So my advice is this: we all have at one time or another started as a mentee in any line of work only to become the mentor through time, dedication and of course experience. So trust the process and enjoy the ride.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
