Making Moments, Not Milestones

“Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.”

-Rose Kennedy

What is it that you seek out of life? Fame? Fortune? Leaving an impact on the lives of others? Deep, thought provoking questions but I have one more for you before we dive into today’s quote. What is it that matters to you most: the milestones you have reached in your life or is it the actual moments? To American philanthropist Rose Kennedy it is the moments that matter most. I realize that it really comes down to individual preference but for me it is also those moments that matter the most. Besides the number of moments outweigh the number of milestones in my life. They are in essence the mini-milestones along our journey in life to discovering who we truly are and what we can truly become.

Milestones are the markers of past and future accomplishments that show that something big has been achieved and it is important to celebrate but the moments create the pathway towards them. What we realize when we look back on the pathway we have created we can see that the road was not always a straight one. There were bumps along the way and it may have come across certain roadblocks where we had to change course. The past marks the grit and perseverance it took to make it and is something we should all be proud of. Now the pathway in front of us has yet to be defined and often comes with our fear of the unknown because of it. This is when we allow our moral compass to guide us. Our values and ethics help us create and define our own path with each of those moments we experience. It helps us to achieve those milestones along the way. Our moral compass helps make us into who are and is always something that will be a part of us. It is our beacon of hope, truth and above all love. And that is the moment that matters most.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
