Our Greatest Teacher

“It’s those who lie outside ordinary experience who have the most to teach us.”

-Malcolm Gladwell

Look at the world around you and the people who live within in it. Each of them possess a special skill or talent that all have a lesson to teach us if we give the time and attention for them to do so. And sometimes they are the ones that are in our own line of work or way of thinking for that matter, who are not cut from the same cloth, but are those outside of the box thinkers that are our greatest teachers. In today’s quote journalist, public speaker and author Malcolm Gladwell reminds us that it is those who are outside of the norm of ordinary experience are the ones that have the most that teach us. They are the ones that have actually experienced life and career beyond the surface level of things. They are much more in tune with the world around them and their place within it. In essence, they fully understand and embody, to quote from the movie The Lion King, “The circle of life.”

They are socially aware. They have the innate ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, which includes those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Their experiences allow for a much more holistic experience and they have a greater appreciation for diversity. The lessons we learn in life are not found necessarily in a textbook. They are found in our own learning, our own self discovery and mostly what we are able to learn from others. Make sure to live life with not only an open mind but with an open heart. This shows yourself and others your willingness to be taught beyond that ordinary experience and experience the extraordinary leaving you inspired and wanting more learning to ensue.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
