Overlook To Overcome
“The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.”
-William James
There are times in our life when we have to turn the other cheek to avoid an unnecessary conflict. To coin a phrase from singer Kenny Rogers’ Gambler: “You’ve got to know when to hold them. Know when to fold them. Know when to walk away and know when to run.” In today’s quote American philosopher William James mentions that when we are able to know when to overlook something is indeed the art of being wise. This comes with maturity and experience of course but this doesn’t mean we cannot guide our children in this practice from an early age. We can actually guide anyone at any age as a matter of fact.
It is important that for every situation we encounter we have a decision to make: to engage or not engage. Each situation will be different and what you decide may or may not have an effect on the outcome. This is where you must weigh the options and determine which pathway to choose. No one can determine this for you. You must rely on your intuition and your own gut feeling. Realize you cannot always predict the outcome but with the facts that may be presented before you, you can make an educated and heartfelt decision. Just remember life is about hits and misses with our decisions. Learn from them and realize that sometimes it is necessary to turn the other cheek for a better outcome.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
