Becoming The Change: Empathy Over Sympathy

“Empathy is being with someone and feeling with someone.”

-Tamara Levitt

Often times when we try to promote social awareness we have the tendency to make the mistake of leading with sympathy rather than empathy. Remember that sympathy is when we feel bad for someone else and their potential misfortune. However empathy is that ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In other words it is putting themselves in another person’s shoes or looking at things through another person’s perspective. As Canadian author and also the main speaker for the Calm App Tamara Levitt puts it in today’s quote empathy is being with someone and feeling with someone. In essence it captures the full experience of what the other person is going through, reserving judgment, and offering them your never wavering support. That is what empathy is all about.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
