“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed before it is faced.”
-James Baldwin
We know that actions speak louder than words. How many times have we heard or we’ve said to ourselves that we were going to change something about ourselves with regards to correcting certain bad habits? Less time on our cell phones scrolling social media. Watching less TV. Eating healthier. Meditating. The list goes on and on. In today’s quote American writer and activist James Baldwin says essentially that in order for change to really occur we must first face it. To me I think we talk a good game, know what needs to be changed about ourselves or about certain things in society but I do not think we stare dead into the soul of the true thing that needs to be changed. It is imperative that we truly hone in and do a deep dive so to speak to get to the central issue of what is needing change.
We need to ask ourselves, why are we having the tendency to avoid it? What is preventing us from taking that leap of faith and moving towards truly making that effort to change? Remember Rome was not built in a day and neither will the change we are trying to make. Until we face our fears of what we are trying to change and reach out for help if need be to others in order to make that change then we will forever be on that proverbial hamster wheel and will never come off of it. The first step in becoming the change is making the choice today to face those things you want to change head on. Remember you can do this and you are never alone.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
