“Give people what they want and they will like you for now. Give people what they need and they will value you forever.”
-Simon Sinek
One of the main components of becoming more socially aware is having the ability to empathize with others and looking at thinks through their perspective. As author, speaker and podcaster Simon Sinek mentions in today’s quote that it is more about giving others what they need and not necessarily what they want. The difference is when we want something it often times is something that will only last temporarily. For example, you may have a craving for ice cream or chocolate chip cookies at this very moment. As soon as you have it you are satisfied for the time being, that is, until the next time. It satisfies “the now.” On the opposite side of things when you need something like a job or a partner to share the rest of your life with this will outlast that feeling of “the now” and it will be something you will value for the rest of your life.
When we relate this thinking about others we need to let our focus be on giving others what they need, not what they want. It needs to be something that they will value and that has a positive impact on them. Remember this and see your social awareness increase significantly.
