“The measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those on the margins, but in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them.”
-Greg Boyle
Compassion is defined as a sympathetic concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. In today’s quote Priest Greg Boyle states that the measure of compassions lies not in our service of those on the margins, but in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them. That service he refers to I think means that we love and support all as we learn to relate to one another through our experiences. This leads to an open dialogue in a way towards understanding each others’ characteristics and/or origins. The thing is this: we control that measure of compassion in whether we provide an abundance of it or very little. I look at it like a turn knob on an oven and we are at the controls. The question is how much are willing to increase our measurement of compassion for others? It is all up to us.
