American spiritual teacher Ram Daas was very wise and his quote for today is no exception. Humor, especially at our own expense is an important part of our life or as he puts it our journey. For me, it is something that has always been a part of me and who I am. And the one thing that I have no qualms about is laughing at myself. From my Dad jokes or puns to finding the humor in almost anything, puts me in a very happy state of mind most often. Life is often so very serious especially with what the world at large is constantly facing. I refuse to let the violence, sorrow and at times depressing series of events get me down. This by no means doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect me in some way because it does but I choose to not dwell on things I cannot control and focus on things that I can, which is humor: whether it be humoring myself or others. Besides wouldn’t you rather be in a positive state of mind rather than a negative one all the time?
There are many times where I may inadvertently make a silly mistake or clumsily trip over something and/or say something that either makes fun of myself like me being truly colorblind or turning a stressful situation into a rather light hearted one. I recognize when the time is right to exhibit that humor and strategically work that humor right into the conversation. I’d like to think I am not only socially aware of things but also very self aware of this gift that I think I possess. Humor breeds I think happiness in myself and others which I think is pretty cool.
