The Little Things
“Servant leadership is doing the little things consistently.”
-John Norlin
One of my main three drivers in life that is represented by my Twitter handle on social media and what actually are the same three words engraved on a Mantraband (bracelet) that I wear each and every day are : Serve Lead Inspire. My purpose each and every day is that in no matter what role I embody in that particular moment whether it be as an Assistant Principal, co -worker, friend, husband or father I live my life through these core values. There is an intentionality for having “Serve” be the first one though as I believe the other two cannot happen without the goal of serving others leading the way. In today’s quote Co-Founder and podcast host of Character Strong John Norlin says that servant leadership is doing the little things consistently. Examples of this can be things such as looking to help others by offering it before it is even asked and seeking to be that level of support that is needed for whatever the situation may require of us. This can be as simple as just lending an empathetic ear which makes an impactful difference. What we must always keep in perspective as a servant leader is that it is never about us but the it is the people around us that we serve. For me I serve my staff, students and their families. I try to bring my “A” game each and every day. I’m by far not perfect but try to let them know how much they are appreciated and loved. This be done by writing them a complimentary note and putting it in their mailbox, leaving that same type of note on their desk after I visit their classroom or just sending them a quick email or text letting them know how important they are at the school and to me. I go into classrooms and read the room and if it looks like someone needs a pick me up I give them a smile or tell them one of my puns which will usually get them to at least chuckle. It’s the little things done consistently like John Norlin said is what servant leadership is all about.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
