Becoming The Change Podcast (Episode 641): Start With The Heart

Welcome to the Becoming The Change Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.

Start With The Heart

“Start with the heart. Empathize with who they are and where they are at. Connect with them on a human level. That’s how you begin to effectively communicate.”

-Peter Vargas

We’ve all heard the phrase begin with the end in mind. But there is a phrase I think is just as good if not better shared by CEO Of Advance Research Peter Vargas: Start with the heart. This is in my opinion essential in today’s ever changing world. Within his quote he continues with a focus on empathy (not sympathy) and the importance of knowing who they are and where they are at in life. Knowing who someone is with regards to their background or culture is a key component of social awareness. It also shows that they matter. When he refers to connecting with them on a human level he is basically saying to be genuine. When we support someone from the inside out we open a doorway to truly understanding another person and seeing them for who they truly are.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
