We Are All Broken
“Being broken is what makes us human. We all have our reasons. Sometimes we’re fractured by the choices we make; sometimes we’re shattered by things we would never have chosen. But brokennesss is also the source of common humanity, the basis for our shared search for comfort, meaning and healing.”
-Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy
I’m not sure why we all strive for perfection when it is truly something we never can attain. American lawyer and author of the book Just Mercy Bryan Stevenson reminds us in today’s quote that we are all broken which means we are not perfect. And being broken is in his words what makes use human. It is in my opinion it is what also makes each of us special or unique. We all have the potential to offer great things to one another and to this world if we choose to do so.
As Stevenson goes on to say in his quote that there are times that we become broken by the decisions we make and sometimes it is based on the hand we are dealt when we first come into the world. Being broken should not be looked as we are less than someone else but instead realize that we all have vulnerabilities and that is ok. We need to lean on one another. We have the potential to help each other put those broken pieces back together and make ourselves whole again by providing comfort, meaning and healing to each life we come in contact with.
I am able to do this each and every day with the students I support here are my school. Although some may come from broken homes or other challenges, I have the opportunity to help make them feel whole again by letting them know how important they are and that they are indeed a gift to the world just by being in it.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
