Becoming The Change Podcast (Episode 669): Who Defines Our Circumstances

Welcome to the Becoming The Change Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.

Who Defines Our Circumstances

“Your circumstances don’t define you. You define your circumstances. Be like The Coffee Bean. The power is on the inside.”

-Damon West

What define us? That is a question that has been asked throughout the ages. Often times we think it is our circumstances that define us but that would be the wrong type of thinking. This is because we have no control over this: what type of environment we were born into or how we grew up. As author and speaker Damon West points out we are the ones that define our circumstances. We have the power from within to choose what we want out of life. As my one professor used to say, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” We control our own destiny with every action we take. As long as we keep pushing forward and try and better ourselves it will in return clearly define your own circumstances. The sooner we become aware of this, the better the outcome of our life will be.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
