Becoming The Change Podcast (Episode 706): Motivation And Habit

Welcome to the Becoming The Change Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. Thank you for listening and we hope you consider subscribing to the podcast for future episodes.

Motivation And Habit

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit keeps you going.”

-Jim Rohn

Legendary American entrepreneur and speaker Jim Rohn once stated that “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit keep you going.” The best analogy that comes to my mind is that motivation can be looked at as being that starter for a car. If that spark doesn’t happen, that car is not going anywhere. Motivation is that fire within all of us to be better, to do better and to overcome any challenges that come before us. Now habits are the fuel to keep us going. Again with the car analogy, no gas, no movement. You are stuck. Whether it is a goal of losing weight, meditating or improving in your craft, without having a plan in place and sticking to it for a good amount of time, you will never see those hopes and dreams come to fruition. Motivation is the ying to the habit’s yang. One cannot be done without the other. It is up to us to make sure that each component balances out one another. As Bruce Springsteen once sang in Dancing In the Dark, “you can’t start a fire, without a spark.” So be that spark.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
