“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”
— Sydney J. Harris

Sydney J. Harris’ quote beautifully captures why education—whether it happens inside a classroom, through life experiences, or in quiet moments of curiosity—is essential for us both today and in the future. Education helps us move beyond the “mirror,” where we only see ourselves and our current understanding. It invites us to look outward—to open “windows” into the world around us and discover perspectives, cultures, ideas, and truths that extend far beyond our own.

Education broadens our horizons by giving us the courage to explore, question, and grow. It helps us become more open to new learning, new teachings, and new ways of thinking. At its best, education pushes us out of our comfort zones so we can develop not only intellectually, but emotionally, socially, and morally.

To me, education is twofold. First, when we acquire knowledge, we learn. Second, when we apply, share, or teach that knowledge to others, we learn again—often at an even deeper level. This cycle of learning and teaching becomes a powerful way of “paying it forward,” creating a ripple effect that can positively influence others long after we’ve left the classroom.

Education also goes far beyond textbooks or computers. It teaches us how to communicate, collaborate, listen, empathize, and solve problems. It helps shape our character, strengthen our moral compass, and guide us toward discovering our purpose—what we feel called to do with our lives.

The experiences we gain both in and out of the classroom can be life‑changing. They help us understand who we are, who we want to become, and how we can contribute to the world around us. Education reminds us that learning is not a destination but a lifelong journey—one that transforms our view of ourselves and expands our understanding of what is possible.

When mirrors become windows, our world becomes bigger, richer, and full of opportunity.
