As stated in the previous section, it is essential for families to understand what their school values—both academically and socially/emotionally. These values form the foundation of the programs, supports, and opportunities a school offers its students. While every school has something valuable to contribute, it is vital for families to determine whether those offerings align with the unique needs, strengths, and interests of their child.

The programs available to students often vary depending on their educational level—elementary, middle, or high school. These differences are what make School Choice options possible. When the School Choice window opens, families are able to apply to schools that best match their child’s academic goals, learning style, and personal interests. In the county where I have worked for nearly 30 years, our district offers an impressive range of programs across all three levels. As of the 2024–2025 school year, this includes a variety of academic pathways designed to support and challenge students at every stage of their education:

Talk about a buffet of amazing choices for parents and students alike! My own parents did not have access to this level of choice when I was in school. As you can see from this list, our families have numerous options, and some programs—such as Cambridge—begin in elementary school and continue through middle and high school, providing continuity and long-term academic growth. I am confident that families in other communities have similar opportunities available to them as well.

In addition to specialized academic programs, our district provides Exceptional Student Education (ESE) programs and supports tailored to meet the needs of students who are Autistic, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Developmentally Delayed, ESOL learners, Hospital/Homebound, or who require Occupational Therapy services, as well as supports for students with Intellectual Disabilities and Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, just to name a few. Each of these programs is designed to offer comprehensive, wraparound support for students and their families, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to thrive.

Ultimately, it is imperative that families take the time to research available options and actively involve their children in this decision-making process as they grow older. When students have a voice in their educational journey, they are more engaged, motivated, and likely to make the most of their school experience. Knowing your school, understanding your child, and recognizing where they fit best can make all the difference in fostering academic success and personal growth.
