If we ignore those inner callings, we may eventually find ourselves looking back with regret, wondering what might have happened had we simply been courageous enough to try. One phrase I have shared with my students hundreds of times throughout my career as an educator is, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” Those words capture the essence of personal responsibility. Gary Vaynerchuk reminds us that no one can do the work for us. No one can unlock our potential, pursue our dreams, or write our story on our behalf. While others may encourage us, support us, and inspire us, ultimately the responsibility to act rests in our own hands.

The greatest risk is often not failure but allowing fear, doubt, or comfort to prevent us from ever taking a chance. Whether it is applying for a dream job, starting a business, writing a book, pursuing a passion, or investing in a meaningful relationship, there is value in having the courage to step forward. Even if things do not unfold exactly as we hoped, there is peace in knowing we gave our best effort. Life is much like a hand of cards that we play. None of us gets to choose every card we are dealt. Some hands appear easier, while others present significant challenges. Yet our character is revealed not by the cards we are dealt but by how we choose to play them. We can surrender our future to circumstance and allow the “house” to determine our direction, or we can take ownership of our choices and bet on ourselves.

At the end of our lives, it is unlikely that we will regret the opportunities we pursued with courage and conviction. More often, we regret the chances we never took, the words we never spoke, and the dreams we abandoned before giving them a real opportunity to grow. Betting on yourself does not guarantee success, but it guarantees that your life will be shaped by your choices rather than by your fears. When the final chapter of your story is written, may it be filled not with “what ifs,” but with the satisfaction of knowing you dared to pursue what mattered most.
