“Don’t lose your sleep for people who sleep happily hurting you.”
-Unknown
Let’s face it: the world is filled with different kinds of people. Some genuinely root for your success and will help lift you up every time you fall. Others, unfortunately, seem to thrive on criticism, negativity, or taking advantage of someone’s vulnerable moments. While we cannot always choose who crosses our path, we can choose how much influence they have over our peace of mind.
One of life’s greatest challenges is recognizing how uneven the balance can be between building ourselves up and being torn down. It often takes years to develop self-confidence, healthy self-esteem, and inner strength. Yet sometimes a single careless comment, betrayal, or hurtful action can make us question our worth in an instant. Like a carefully stacked tower in a game of Jenga, one wrong move can make everything feel as though it is crashing down.
When those moments occur, it is important to remember that our value is not determined by someone else’s opinion of us. The words and actions of others may wound us, but they do not define us. Their behavior is a reflection of their character, not our worth. This is why we must create a plan for protecting our peace before adversity arrives. That plan may include setting healthy boundaries, limiting access to toxic individuals, surrounding ourselves with supportive people, practicing self-care, strengthening our faith, or reminding ourselves daily of who we truly are. While we cannot control what others say or do, we can control how we respond. That is where our power lies.
None of this means the hurt disappears overnight. Pain is real, and healing takes time. Acknowledge the hurt, learn from the experience, and allow yourself the grace to recover. But do not give someone free rent in your mind who has shown little regard for your well-being. Do not surrender your sleep, your joy, or your peace to people who never lose a moment of theirs thinking about the pain they caused. Your energy is too valuable to be consumed by bitterness. Instead, invest it in your growth, your purpose, and the people who genuinely care about you. The greatest victory is not proving someone wrong; it is refusing to let their actions steal your peace.
Tonight, choose rest. Tomorrow, choose resilience. And every day, choose to protect the peace that belongs to you.
