“You live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
-Mae West
Life is a gift that comes with no rehearsal and no second chance. We each travel this journey only once, and while none of us knows exactly how long our time will be, we all share one certainty: every day is an opportunity to shape the story we leave behind. Mae West’s quote serves as a powerful reminder that a meaningful life is not measured by its length, but by the purpose, character, and impact we bring to it. Living life “right” does not mean living a perfect life. Perfection is an impossible standard. Mistakes will be made, opportunities will be missed, and regrets will occasionally find their way into our hearts. These experiences are part of being human. What truly matters is how we respond when adversity, disappointment, or failure enters our path. Our ability to learn, grow, adapt, and move forward often defines us far more than our successes ever could.
Each day presents a choice. We can remain passive observers of our circumstances, or we can take ownership of our actions and create positive change in our lives and the lives of others. By holding ourselves accountable, embracing growth, and choosing to make our own waves rather than waiting for them to arrive, we move closer to becoming the best version of ourselves. A life well lived is built on a foundation of love, compassion, understanding, and service. It is reflected in the encouragement we offer, the kindness we extend, and the example we set for those around us. True legacy is not found in wealth, status, or recognition. Those things may be remembered for a moment, but they rarely endure. The most lasting impact comes from the lives we touch, the people we inspire, and the difference we make in our communities and relationships.
When our story is eventually written in full, what will matter most is whether we left the world a little better than we found it. Did we help others grow? Did we share hope when it was needed? Did we lead with integrity, empathy, and purpose? Our script is still being written, and every day gives us another chance to shape its next chapter. If we commit to living intentionally, loving deeply, and serving others selflessly, then when all is said and done, one life truly can be enough.
