“For most of us the problem isn’t that we aim to high and fail—it’s just the opposite. We aim too low and succeed.”
-Sir Ken Robinson
Success is one of the most celebrated concepts in our society. We often view it as the ultimate measure of achievement, a sign that we have “made it” or are thriving in life. Yet many of us unknowingly define success by comparing ourselves to others, meeting the minimum expectation, or settling for goals that feel safe and attainable. When we do this, we may experience success, but we risk falling short of our true potential.
Many people fear failure. They hesitate to pursue ambitious goals because they worry about what might happen if they don’t achieve them. However, Sir Ken Robinson challenges us to rethink that perspective. The greatest danger is not aiming high and missing the mark. The greater danger is setting our sights too low, reaching those goals with ease, and mistakenly believing we have become all that we were capable of becoming. When we lower our standards or choose comfort over growth, we create an illusion of success. We may achieve what we set out to do, but if the goal never challenged us, stretched us, or inspired us to become better, what have we truly gained? Growth happens when we venture beyond what is familiar and pursue something greater than our current abilities. The process may involve setbacks, mistakes, and even failure, but those experiences often teach us more than easy victories ever could.
I often reminded my students that the level of our success is directly tied to the standards we set for ourselves. Excellence is not achieved by lowering the bar. Instead, it comes from continually raising our expectations and striving to meet them. Life does not adjust itself to accommodate our comfort. Rather, it invites us to rise to the challenges before us and discover strengths we never knew we possessed.
Today, consider the goals, expectations, and aspirations you have set for yourself. Are they truly reflective of your potential, or are they simply comfortable enough to guarantee success? The greatest accomplishments often begin with the courage to pursue something that feels just beyond reach. After all, it is better to stretch yourself toward greatness and grow through the effort than to settle for less and never discover what you were truly capable of becoming.
