“Happiness is just a state of mind.”

Today’s quote and image really resonated with me and what the power of perspective really can hold if your level of belief in yourself is strong enough. There was a time when success was measured less by where we finished and more by the effort we gave. We didn’t feel the need to come out on top in every sporting event, win every competition, or take home first prize at the science fair. The outcome wasn’t always the focus. The experience, the growth, and the joy of participating were often enough.

Today, however, it can sometimes feel as though winning has become the only thing that matters or getting that elusive A as a letter grade. We live in a world filled with comparisons, rankings, scores, and social media highlights. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that our worth is tied to our position rather than our progress. That is why this image carries such a powerful message.

The child standing on the third-place podium is celebrating the accomplishment of making it onto the podium due to the effort they gave. The joy on their face warms your heart and you find yourself overcome with that same level of joy for them. They are not celebrating necessarily the result but the process it took to get there. All the practices, the sacrifices. On the other hand, the child in first place, despite achieving the highest honor, is not as animated in their achievement and appears more focused on the other child in 3rd place and their reaction; one of excitement and beaming with pride. They seem to be left wondering what could have been different in not only their reaction but in their experience of that moment. While one sees gratitude, the other sees what is missing.

Their rankings are different, but the most important difference is not where they stand. It is how they choose to view where they stand. The image reminds us that happiness is often less about our circumstances and more about our perspective. Two people can experience success and walk away feeling completely different about the outcome. One focuses on what was gained and savoring the moment itself, while the other focuses on what was lost or what might have been.

This does not mean we should stop striving for excellence or setting ambitious goals. Hard work and determination are important. However, we must also learn to appreciate our progress, celebrate our growth, and recognize the achievements we have already earned along the way. If we are constantly looking for or at the next prize, the next accomplishment, or the next person ahead of us, we may miss the joy that exists in the present moment. True happiness comes from appreciating where we are while still working toward where we want to be. It grows when we practice gratitude instead of comparison and when we recognize that success is not always about finishing first. Sometimes success is simply having the courage to show up, give our best effort, and keep moving forward.

At the end of the day, our mindset often determines our happiness more than our circumstances. The question is not, “What place did I finish?” The question is, “What am I choosing to focus on?”
