“Helping others shine won’t dim your own glow.”
-Unknown
When I reflect on today’s quote, I am reminded that encouragement is one of the most powerful gifts we can give another person. The image of one candle lighting others perfectly illustrates this truth. The original candle does not lose its light by sharing it. Instead, the overall brightness increases. What began as one flame becomes many, creating greater warmth and illumination for everyone around it.
This idea brings to mind the story of Monsters, Inc. Throughout much of the movie, Mike and Sulley believe their power comes from collecting children’s screams. While that approach generates energy, it leaves others feeling fearful and diminished. Later, they discover that laughter creates even more energy than fear ever could. More importantly, laughter benefits everyone involved. The children experience joy, while the monsters experience a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment.
There is an important life lesson hidden in that story. Many people spend their lives trying to fill their own emotional buckets through competition, recognition, attention, or personal achievement alone. While these things may provide temporary satisfaction, there is often a greater sense of fulfillment found in helping someone else succeed. When we encourage a struggling colleague, celebrate another person’s achievement, mentor someone who needs guidance, or recognize strengths in others, we often discover that our own sense of purpose grows as well.
The quote’s message is rooted in abundance rather than scarcity. A scarcity mindset convinces us that there is only so much success, recognition, or opportunity available. It causes people to compare themselves to others and sometimes even feel threatened by another person’s accomplishments. An abundance mindset, however, recognizes that success is not a limited resource. Another person’s achievement does not lessen our value. In many cases, it creates new opportunities for everyone. Strong relationship skills are built upon this principle. The best leaders, teachers, teammates, friends, and family members understand the importance of lifting others up. They celebrate victories that are not their own. They recognize potential in others and help bring it to life. They understand that genuine influence comes not from outshining everyone around them, but from helping others become their best selves.
When we choose to support and encourage others, we create a ripple effect. Encouragement inspires confidence. Confidence inspires action. Action inspires growth. Growth inspires success. And often, the people whose lives we impact go on to positively influence countless others in return. At the end of the day, candles were created to share their light. The same is true of us. Our talents, gifts, experiences, and strengths become most meaningful when they are used to benefit others. The remarkable thing is that when we help others shine, we do not lose anything. Instead, we contribute to a brighter world while allowing our own light to shine even more brightly.
