At The Base of Our Human Rights

“Free expression is the base of human rights, the root of human nature, and the mother of truth.”

-Liu Xiaobo

In order to exhibit free expression one must not be under the control of or in power of another and be able to do what he or she chooses while be afforded the opportunity to make one’s thoughts or feelings known. Sounds simple enough right? It should be but there still seems to be barriers which history has shown has always been there. That is why we need to continue to develop one of the most difficult area in Social Emotional Learning: social awareness.

In today’s quote free expressions are built on three entities: human rights, human nature and the mother of truth. Human rights are what should be available to everyone regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language or religion. In 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which consisted of 30 articles affirming an individual’s rights. Some of these rights consisted of, but were not limited to such things as the right to equality, freedom from discrimination, right to an education and the freedom of opinion and information. Again this was declared in 1948 and it is now 2020. Has it improved? Somewhat. We still have a long way to go. Every December 10th is International Human Rights day. Why not make it every day for consistency’s sake?

Human nature is comprised of those characteristics that defines how and why we think, feel and act the way we do. They are what makes us, us. It is what makes us beautiful from the inside. In essence it is the combination of our self awareness, self management and social awareness. We need to take the time to recognize that we are all different and although we might not always agree with one another we need to respect one another. When we do that it will lead towards a more fruitful life.

The mother of truth is just what it is: the truth. Our actions on how we think, feel and act is our truth. Everything we do expresses who we are. You may not like or agree within someone else’s truth and that is ok because that is your own opinion. Remember their truth is their way of free expression just like your truth is yours. If we do can do this then the world can truly be a better place.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
