Trust Thyself

“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 delegates from the original 13 colonies as they declared their independence from Great Britain. This document represented that iron string that every hearted vibrated to on that day and every day forward because they were united and most of all exhibited trust for one another.

Trust is, in my opinion, one of the main pillars within our moral compass. It is where we have a certain confidence in the honesty and more importantly the integrity within ourselves and within others. It is also the most difficult pillars to attain as this could be from past experiences of having that trust broken and being leery of putting ourselves out there again with the concern of getting hurt again. As mentioned, trust is two-fold: it is built and maintained within ourselves and with others.

There is a saying that says “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” I think trust is what makes the heart grow stronger. Without trust there is no relationship. No relationship with others or with ourselves. We cannot expect things to function or function well at all without establishing this first. We are all interconnected through trust and must work hard to establish and maintain. If we hold and stay true to what our morals and values then trust will continue to serve and benefit us and others.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
