Our Moral Compass: These Two Things Are Inseparably Connected

“Human happiness and moral duty are inseparably connected.”

-George Washington

Our first leader of the United States President George Washington was known to lead with a deep level of integrity with high moral character while leading his troops during the American Revolutionary War. His belief that human happiness and moral duty were two things that are inseparably connected is in my opinion the perfection combination needed for having a strong moral compass. I believe our moral duty is to bring out the happiness in others which in turn brings out the happiness within ourselves. If we learn to value others by putting their needs first instead of our own we will live life the way it was meant to be.

If we only pursue happiness for ourselves it will never sustain itself over the long run because our moral compass was not built to only serve ourselves. We all have principles we live by, certain standards. It is the innate love we show for one another that brings forth that sense of human happiness which is like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. Let’s not lose sight of our moral obligation to be of service to others. When we continuously show gratitude, compassion and generosity towards one another happiness is bound to shine through within each and everyone of us.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
