“The day will come when man will recognize woman as his peer, not only at the fireside, but in councils of the nations. Then, and not until then, will there be the perfect comradeship, the ideal union between the sexes that shall result in the highest development of the race.”
-Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony was an American women’s rights activist who fought for most of her life for the equal rights of women. Here in the United States women have the right to vote, can hold a public office and become the CEO of a company. Just like any man can. Our country has made some significant strides since the time of Susan B. Anthony. We have come a long way since her time but I feel we still have a long way to go.
When I look back at her quote I wish I could say all men recognize women as their peer in more ways that one. Unfortunately I cannot. Not here in America or in some other parts of the world. And for that it makes me sad when I think about it because I really don’t understand why. We can only excel as a society when we consider everyone as equals no matter their gender or the color of their skin. Our differences should be celebrated and honored, not discouraged.
My hope for the future is we elect a female President one day, even a Vice President for that matter. I believe they can run things just as well as a man, in fact even better. What I admire most is that women are still fighting to be recognized as equals because they are. Its that simple. So my message to all the men out there that feel that women are not their equal: time to wake up because you are wrong. They are in fact not only our equal but in many ways better than we are. As men we ourselves need to be better than that. We need to appreciate them for who they are and what they have to offer the world. That’s the only way we as a society can continue moving forward towards being our best selves.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
